GLOSSARY

Words we use carefully.

Plain definitions help readers understand the limits and intent of our editorial language.

A glossary cannot remove every ambiguity, but it can make a conversation more precise. Onward uses these terms in an informational context, with room for differences in age, setting, experience, culture, and daily schedule.

Mobility

The ability to move a joint or body area with control and comfort in a particular context.

Context matters: mobility may look different during a slow walk, a floor transition, or a task that requires reaching.

Strength

The capacity to produce and control force, which can look different across tasks and environments.

Onward treats strength as task-specific rather than as a single number or identity.

Recovery

The ongoing process of returning toward readiness through rest, nourishment, gentle activity, and time.

Recovery is not a fixed timetable and can be influenced by sleep, workload, travel, and temperature.

Routine

A repeatable pattern that supports an intention while remaining adaptable to real life.

A routine can include a minimum version for busy days and a fuller version when conditions allow.

Pacing

Adjusting effort, duration, and pauses to match current capacity and context.

Pacing is a way of noticing changing conditions, not a score or a competition.

Awareness

Paying attention to sensations, environment, and choices without treating every observation as a diagnosis.

Awareness can support reflection while still leaving room for uncertainty and professional guidance.

Using the glossary in practice

  1. Choose the unfamiliar word that is shaping your question.
  2. Compare it with the related terms rather than treating it as a label.
  3. Return to the source article and notice the limits described there.
  4. Write down a practical question for your own setting if useful.

Definitions support shared language; they do not replace an individual assessment or a conversation with an appropriate local professional.

“Clear language does not make a subject simple; it gives readers a fairer way to explore its complexity.”— Onward glossary desk, 2026
